Rooted in language. Growing together.

Small words.
Lasting connections.

A conversation with grandparents. A favourite song. The confidence to share a story. These are the connections that language makes possible.

Everything begins with a conversation. Here are a few things families often want to know.

Explore enrolment
Who can enrol at South Asian Hindi School?

Children aged 5 to 16, from Kindergarten to Year 11, at any NSW school. Adults who want to learn Hindi are welcome too. Many students start with no Hindi at all.

Does my child need to know Hindi already?

No. Children from Hindi-speaking and non-Hindi-speaking families both learn here. Students from non-Hindi backgrounds are taught in separate classes with extra listening and speaking practice, and every new student is placed in one of seven levels after a short assessment.

When and where are classes?

Every Sunday during NSW school terms, 10 am to 12 pm, at Kogarah (St George Girls High School), Parramatta (Parramatta West Public School) and Schofields (Galungara Public School). Online classes run 10 am to 11:20 am over Zoom.

How much does it cost?

A$50 per term per child, or A$70 per term for a family with more than one child enrolled. You can attend a trial class before paying. Active and Creative Kids vouchers are accepted and financial assistance is available for families in need.

What will my child learn?

Reading, writing, listening and speaking Hindi, including the Devanagari script, with poetry, singing, drama and Indian dance woven into every Sunday. A typical class is two hours and classes have no more than 20 students.

Is this an approved community language school?

Yes. South Asian Hindi School is a Community Languages School approved by the NSW Department of Education and is run by South Asian Australian Association Incorporated, a not-for-profit association supported by Multicultural NSW, Bayside Council and Georges River Council.

Are there dance or other activities?

Student dance groups follow the Hindi class on Sundays, and Bollywood, Bharatanatyam and Kathak classes and yoga sessions run alongside at Kogarah. Ask the school for the current timetable.

How do I choose the right branch?

Pick the branch closest to home or the online option, then select it in the enrolment form. The school confirms class placement and availability with you.

Can I volunteer at the school?

Yes. Classes are run by volunteers who hold a Working With Children Check, and the school offers free volunteer training to parents and community members. Apply through the volunteer form on this website.

Do you teach other South Asian languages?

The Association is gathering expressions of interest for Bangla, Nepali, Malayalam and Tamil classes, which will start once there are enough students for a group. Contact the school to register your interest.
